Paper maps falling by the roadside

The San Francisco Chronicle has published a short article on the decline of paper road maps usage among American motorists.  The increasingly popularity of online mapping for driving directions has resulted in a steady reduction of requests for paper maps from AAA.  The article quotes Damon Wood, a sales manager from Viriginia:

“Maps are kind of old-fashioned,” he said. “They’re more of a collector’s item – something you look at if you’re going into an area and want to see where you want to go and what to see and do. But if you’re going from the airport to the hotel or to see a client, MapQuest or GPS is better.”
