In a little more than a year, scientists collaborating around the world have assembled geologic data for a significant portion of the earth.  The project, entitled OneGeology, has pulled together geologic data provided by over 15,000 scientists from 79 countres.  The results of the project will be presented at the 33rd International Geological Congress (IGC) which takes place next week in Oslo, Norway from August 6-14.

About 60-70% of the earth’s geology that has been mapped and collected for OneGeology and the project is continuously updating data as it becomes available.  Unless restricted, most of the data is available at a scale of 1:1,000,000.  Access to the data is available via the OneGeology Portal (unfortunately this portal isn’t compatible with FireFox 3).  Also, KML and WMC files can be generated from the portal.  The OneGeology site has plenty of resources for understanding the project and utilizing the data including their cookbook (PDF format) entitled “How to Serve a OneGeology Level 1 Conformant WMS Using Mapserver.”

OneGeology has even posted a quick overview of the OneGeology portal on YouTube:
