Despite the increasing popularity of Google Maps, MapQuest is still the most visited online mapping application in the United States according to Hitwise Intelligence.  Accordng to Heather Hopkins at Hitwise Intelligence, Mapquest captured 39.49% of U.S. Internet visits compared to Google Maps which garnered 35.67%.  However, the overall trend seems to show that Google Maps isn’t far from overcoming MapQuest and becoming the number 1 most visited online mapping application.  Since January 0f 2008, Google Maps has steadily increased its share of U.S. Internet visits while MapQuest has been steadily dropping.
