The latest technological advances in GIS have come most notably in the forum of the Internet.  Access to spatial data as well as advanced mapping and spatial analysis over the Internet is becoming more common.

ArcIMS
Documentation, tutorials, and tips and tricks for using ArcIMS, the latest Internet Map Server from ESRI. With this release, you can create simple, “out-of-the box” map services with pan, zoom and simple query functions.

AspMap
AspMap is a Web mapping component for embedding spatial data access, display and analysis capabilities in Web applications and services. AspMap supports ASP and ASP.NET.

GEO-DATA Explorer (GEODE)
Use GEO-DATA Explorer (GEODE) to access, view, and download information from geo-spatial databases containing a broad spectrum of data produced by the USGS and other government agencies.

Geography Network
The Geography Network was created by ESRI and is based on ArcIMS technology. The idea is to provide an internet based forum for viewing and accessing spatial data from a variety of commercial and public domain sources.

GeoServ.org
GeoServ delivers interactive maps over the Internet. Developed by the Terrain Sciences Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, GeoServ provides access to key geoscience data in the form of dynamic maps and associated databases, which can be explored over the Web.

Google Earth
Google Earth combines satellite imagery, geographic data and Google’s search capabilities to create a virtual globe application that you can download to your desktop to access online spatial data. Find resources here to help you expand this geographic data viewer application.

Google Maps
Using Google Maps on individual web sites, called map hacking, is a fast and easy way to add geographic information to personal web sites. Listed here are resources to help you understand how to embed Google Maps in your own site.

iMapper
Free user-friendly ArcView extension. The purpose of this extension is to allow ArcView users to display their maps and data to people over the Web in a quick and easy fashion without having to have a map server.

MapGuide
MapGuide is AutoDesk’s (the makers of AutoCAD) map server. Access links to demo and customer online applications.

Mapserver
MapServer is an OpenSource development environment for building spatially enabled Internet applications. The software builds upon other popular OpenSource or freeware systems like Shapelib, FreeType, Proj.4, libTIFF, Perl and others.

Map-TV
Map-TV is a mapserver that has a built in web server. This map server uses ESRI shapefile format for data display.

Web Mapper
Online resource devoted to Internet based GIS. Find live online samples of the most common Internet Map Server software.

WebView
WebView is an ArcView-Extension that provides you with the possibility to present your Views on the Web or on CD ROM. The extension is wizard based so knowledge of web programming languages is not necessary. Download an evaluation copy from this site.

      i am searching for a web server for gis applications. pl advise a suitable server.

      Anyone know what the best GIS application is to use on the iPhone web browser interface, safari? I’ve seen a few that seem to work, but we keep losing functionality on certain tools.
