"Father of GIS" Interview
The Ottawa Citizen has a profile of Roger Tomlinson explaining, “Millions of users and more than 300,000 government agencies owe a debt to the Ottawa man who brought geography into the high-tech era.” Although British born, Tomlinson has made his hometown in Ottawa and received the moniker “Father of GIS” for developed the GIS model for the Canada Land Inventory. Tomlinson and Jack Dangermond were the joint recipients of the National Geographic Bell Medal. Tomlinson and Dangermond are only the second ever recipients of this award:
National Geographic’s Alexander Graham Bell Medal has only been awarded once before. Bradford and Barbara Washburn, renowned explorers, mountaineers and mapmakers, received it in 1980 for their contributions to geography and cartography.
