Key Indicator Data System (KIDS)

KIDS (Key Indicator Database Systems) is an open source, thematic mapping and GIS application developed by the World Agriculture Information Centre (WAICENT) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. According to the website, KIDS was “developed originally for the purpose of collecting, mapping and disseminating food insecurity and vulnerability indicators” and is “a software framework that provides the ability to implement thematic information systems that collect, reference, visualize, exchange and disseminate statistical, survey and indicator data. Visualization is possible through tables, mapping, raster images and graphs. Basic GIS overlay and legend editing functions are available for non-GIS users.” The Application is developed in Java with a layers for XSL and webservices and is customizable and easy to use. The core engine is in Java, and the front-end interface is in XSL and Javascript.
BASINS 4.0 is an environmental modeling interface built upon the open source GIS MapWindow. The system contains tools to download data from the internet and can perform basic GIS functions to prepare inputs for modeling pollutant loading in streams. There is also a Windows-based Climate Assessment Tool, for assessing potential impacts of changing climate on stream flows and pollutant loads. BASINS 4 also has the ability to transfer and share GIS standard data (shapefile, dbf, and GeoTiff) between other licensed GIS software.

This freeware application takes shapefiles and generates a working thematic map using Google Maps. Only a limited knowledge of HTML and Javascript is needed to use Google Map Creator.
TNTatlas is a free Geodata viewing tool for Mac OS X and Windows. Geodata files currently supported include shapefiles, DWG, DGN, DXF, JPEG, JP2, TIFF, GeoTIFF, PNG, ECW, and MrSID formats. TNTatlas also has features for querying, measurement, printing, sketching of the displayed geodata.
Shape Viewer® is a free tool, which you can use to view ESRI® Shape files.
A free on-line utility that creates SVG maps and profiles from GPS waypoints and tracks; many popular data formats are supported. Also includes utilities for locating street addresses and converting GPS files to plain text or GPX.
ResMap provides free online access to GIS-ready satellite data. Imagery covering the entire globe is accessible. Over 10 Terabytes of LANDSAT imagery is available for direct and free use in GIS/CAD/RS/MS Office applications on your desktop without the need to download the data.

DIVA-GIS is free GIS application that is used for many different purposes. You can use it to make shapefiles, grid data, and satellite images. DIVA-GIS is particularly useful for mapping species distribution, and for analyzing these data in various ways.
